Shabbat Balak - July 19-20 - Tamuz 17
Candle lighting will be at 8:04 p.m. on Friday, July 19.
Friday evening will feature a Family Service at 8:00 p.m., filled with song and story. With Camp Shalom winding down for the week, we look forward to having kids around to help Rabbi Sydni lead the service! Family Service is followed by a delicious oneg.
Our Saturday bagel breakfast will begin at 9:30 a.m., with our service at 10:00 a.m., followed by a Kiddush lunch and our first session of “Why Conservative Judaism?” Together, we’ll explore what makes this congregation, Agudath Achim, a “Conservative” congregation and what we might do to embrace that tradition of ours in even more depth.
Yasher Koah in advance to Ivy, Caleb, and Barbara Joseph for leading Torah Service and Musaf and to Richard Zweig for reading Haftarah this Shabbat!
Shabbat will conclude at 9:02 p.m. on Saturday, July 20.
Shiv’a Asar b’Tamuz - July 21 - Tamuz 18
If you’re a Hebrew speaker, you may be confused that a holiday called “the 17th of Tamuz” is actually on the 18th! This year, our minor fast day remembering the beginning of the destruction of our Second Temple falls a day later than usual so as not to impede with Shabbat. The fast lasts from sunrise (6:22 a.m.) until sunset (8:21 p.m.) As with all fasts, if you have any medical reasons preventing you from experiencing a safe and healthy fasting experience, you are obligated not to fast. For more information on Shiv’a Asar b’Tamuz, visit https://www.myjewishlearning.com/article/17th-of-tammuz/ or ask your local rabbi (that’s me!).
Camp Chai will run from July 22-August 2. Thank you to Rosa Padin for directing both Jewish community camps this summer!

Along with normal board meeting proceedings, we'll be coming to concrete conclusions about the future of security at Agudath Achim. All members are welcome to contribute to our security conversation, as you are the people we're striving to keep safe.

We’re looking for families to host the Scouts during their visit. Please call David Brainis (318-426-0765) if you have space available in your home!

Friday, July 26, 7:00 p.m. - Covered Dish Supper at Agudath Achim
We'll be hosting the Tzofim for a covered dish supper before services! There are twelve of them, so please bring a larger portion than usual. Dessert, bread, and drinks are already provided, so no need to bring those.

If you’d like to be on the mailing list for any of these learning opportunities, please let me know so that I can better get a sense of numbers. Also, just to let you know in advance, I’m in the process of writing both a kashrut policy for the synagogue and a list of resources for finding kosher food in Shreveport. As always, I will be very interested in your input
